Father Schmaltz was born in Russia and came to America with Bishop Evdokim in 1914. After becoming first a monk, and then a preist in 1916, he went to Alaska as a missionary. The Orthodox Church in America traces its beginnings to Russian Orthodox missionaries who settled in Alaska in 1794. Over the years the Church in America was administered as a diocese, and later an archdiocese, of the Russian Orthodox Church, and was known as the Russian Orthodox Greek Catholic Church of America.
